The 2025 Harvest Highlights, Award Moments, and Wine of the Month

The 2025 harvest season is in full swing at Kanonkop, bringing long days, early mornings, and the excitement of another vintage in the making. The first grapes were harvested on 10th February, marking the start of the harvest season, which began 17 days later than the previous year.

“January brought about very favourable ripening conditions, with some of the coolest day – night temperatures recorded in decades”, says Winemaker Francois Van Zyl. “This unusual but welcoming shift for what is typically a hot February is the ideal climatic conditions, supporting even ripening, good colour development and sustained quality. The Pinotage harvest is certainly living up to the occasion in its centenary year. Our unique, indigenous grape is putting on its prettiest party outfit, and we can’t wait to see how the rest of the vintage unfolds.”

Award Winning Moments

On 6 February 2025, the annual Wine Harvest Commemorative Event was held at Groot Constantia, celebrating five outstanding individuals for their contributions to the South African wine industry. This special tradition marks 366 years since the first Cape grapes were pressed in 1659, honoring excellence and heritage in winemaking.

Johann Krige, CEO of Kanonkop has been honoured with the prestigious 1659 Award for Visionary Leadership – a testament to his unwavering commitment to shaping the future of South African wine. More than just a leader, he has been a driving force in the industry, not simply anticipating change but pioneering it.

As a team, we couldn’t be prouder to see his dedication and passion recognised at this level. Under Johann’s guidance, Kanonkop Wine Estate has become a benchmark for fine red wines.
