Neal Martin – Vinous SA Report
Neal Martin, well respected wine critic from Vinous, released his article “Finding Cool Sunshine: South Africa,” which included the following new reviews of the Kanonkop Kadette range of wines:
Under winemaker Abri Beeslaar, Kanonkop has consolidated its position, at least in my mind, as one of South Africa’s leading traditional producers. Much of their success is down to meticulous vineyard husbandry that means that even their entry-level wines under the Kadette range punch above their weight and represent unbeatable value. Readers should refer to my previous report for reviews on their premium cuvées, which I retasted again, merely confirming my praise.
Kanonkop Kadette Pinotage Rosé 2020 – 89 points
The 2020 Pinotage Rosé Kadette has a clean, fresh and quite understated bouquet featuring touches of strawberry and a subtle fish-scale scent. The palate is vibrant and fresh, delivering superb acidity from beginning to end and a slightly waxy texture toward the finish. This is a very satisfying, classy rosé from Kanonkop that comes recommended.
Kanonkop Kadette Cape Blend 2019 – 88 points
The 2019 Cape Blend Kadette has a clean, precise bouquet of blackberry and perfumed rose petal aromas. The well-balanced palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and a briny finish. Fine.
Kanonkop Kadette Pinotage 2019 – 89 points
The 2019 Pinotage Kadette has a perfumed bouquet of boysenberry and iris petal aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins. Quite saline and strict toward the finish, which is delineated and refreshing.
